Jane Harrison
Archaeologist Jane has lived in St Clement's with her family for 17 years. She is very keen to pass on her enthusiasm for archaeology and history and is delighted to have the opportunity to do so in her home area. For the East Oxford Project Jane will take particular care of the training and teaching and the excavation/test pit side of things and assisting in research in Anglo-Saxon and medieval artefacts from East Oxford .
Jane specialises in urban archaeology as well as the archaeology of the Viking period in the North Atlantic. She has excavated in the Orkneys and the North-East of England, as well as in Oxfordshire, has worked on a number of community archaeology projects and teaches archaeology in the Department for Continuing Education. Her whole family relishes the variety, vibrancy and richness of the east and south-east of the City; Jane is enjoying working with project volunteers and groups and finding out more about the past of our local area.
Jane is a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists (MIfA).
David Griffiths
David has lived in East Oxford for the past 18 years. He teaches archaeology to university students and the public as a University Lecturer (Reader), and works as Director of Studies in Archaeology in the Department for Continuing Education. He is a research specialist in the Saxons and Vikings, as well as landscape archaeology in general. He has wide archaeological experience of digging, surveying and finds studies in the UK, Norway and Europe. He also has another current field research project, based in Orkney (Scotland).
David's role in the project is to manage the team on behalf of the University, and to help the other members of the team in taking the project out into the community to investigate as many fascinating things and places as we possibly can in the time available.
David thinks East Oxford is a fascinating corner of the world and is enthused about finding out more by working together with local people, volunteers, groups and schools.
David is a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists (MIfA).
Olaf Bayer
Olaf joined the project in April 2012 as a project officer. Having previously worked in commercial archaeology, he has recently completed a PhD at the University of Central Lancashire. He specialises in prehistoric landscape archaeology and is experienced in excavation, geophysical survey and stone tool analysis. He is particularly interested in investigating the prehistory of East Oxford. He is responsible for training and teaching in surveying and geophysical survey, and for keeping this website up-to-date with everything that is happening in the Project.
Olaf has lived in East Oxford on and off since 2001 and is looking forward to working with the local community to discover the archaeology on his doorstep. He is also involved in research projects in Devon and Hampshire.
